The Never-Ending Coming Out Story

By: Hannah Griffin, LPC

Many of us can likely relate to that familiar experience—rehearsing the words you'll use when you come out to someone for the first time. The conversation replays over and over in your mind before it becomes a reality.

You might have thought the hard part was over. However, the reality is, the coming out process is almost never truly done. It's an ongoing narrative, a series of moments where you decide whether to share your truth or not. This constant decision-making is not just about revealing a personal aspect of yourself; it comes with numerous emotional burdens.

In everyday conversations, people often share mundane details of their lives without a second thought – from discussing their Friday date night plans to the new Netflix series they are binging with their partner. However, not everyone can express themselves freely without first considering their surroundings or personal safety. While some have this freedom naturally, others need to assess the situation before opening up about their lives.

Almost unconsciously, we instinctively run through the options of how to respond and scenarios that might play out.

It can be exhausting.

At times, the hesitation and internal conflict can lead us to question our sense of pride. We might wonder if our reluctance to openly share important aspects of our lives stems from a place of insecurity or a fear of judgment.

The burden of representation adds another layer to the narrative. It goes beyond sharing personal details; suddenly, there's an added responsibility of shaping perceptions or using it as an opportunity to educate others.

If you resonate with some or all of these experiences, remember that you’re not alone. It can be overwhelming to bear the constant weight of having to come out and share aspects of yourself that, unfortunately, society still considers 'controversial’. Grant yourself the grace you deserve. It takes a lot of strength and resilience to be true to oneself, especially in the face of potential societal judgment.
